James Allen. Selected Works

Durata: 1h 29m

James Allen. Selected Works brings together two of the most influential and enduring classics of personal development: As a Man Thinketh and Out from the Heart. These short, thoughtful essays explore the power of thought, the formation of character, the nature of habit, and the quiet strength of self-mastery. First published over a century ago, these works continue to resonate with readers seeking clarity, purpose, and peace of mind. Allen's style is calm, concise, and deeply reflective—free from hype, but rich in insight. There are no quick fixes here. No twelve-step programs. Just a clear, powerful reminder that your thoughts shape your life—and that lasting change begins within. Ideal for listeners interested in mindfulness, moral philosophy, and timeless self-help wisdom. Contents: – As a Man Thinketh – Out from the Heart Allen, James (1864–1912) was an English writer and quiet visionary whose works helped define the modern self-help movement. Born in Leicester, he faced early hardship: his father died unexpectedly while seeking work abroad, and at just fifteen, James left school to support his family. He spent years in modest clerical jobs, but his real work was inward. Allen immersed himself in literature and philosophy, drawing inspiration from thinkers like Leo Tolstoy, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and the teachings of Buddhism and the New Testament. From these influences, he developed a personal philosophy grounded in moral clarity, discipline, and the power of thought. In 1903, he self-published As a Man Thinketh, a short book that quietly changed lives. Its central idea is both simple and profound: "As he thinks in his heart, so is he." With that, Allen placed full responsibility—and full potential—into the hands of the individual. Thought, he believed, was not only creative, but formative: it shapes character, and character shapes destiny. Allen later moved to the seaside town of Ilfracombe with his wife Lily, where he wrote full-time. Over the next ten years, he published nearly twenty books, including Out from the Heart, The Path of Prosperity, and Above Life's Turmoil. He lived simply and avoided fame, dedicating himself to the quiet work of personal growth and spiritual insight.  James Allen died in 1912 at the age of 47. Though his voice was gentle, it continues to speak to those seeking stillness, strength, and a life of purpose.
